Preferred name is a name that is not yet a legal change. A student may request the use of a preferred name for a variety of circumstances, such as a difficult name pronunciation, using a middle name instead of first name, for personal circumstances like a domestic issue or transitioning, etc.

A preferred name will appear on class and grade rosters. The preferred name will not appear on official transcripts.

Official documentation is not required for a change in preferred name.

Changes to the preferred name will not alter the RIC campus ID or RIC email.
